Medical centres have a problem most commercial sites don't: they can't close. Patients arrive from 7am, staff are on site before that, and there's no quiet window during business hours to grind, coat and cure a floor.
So when The Ashley Medical Centre in Westmead needed 300 mยฒ of ageing pebblecrete walkways and steps brought back to life, we built the entire program around one rule: not one patient should notice we were there.
The Challenge
Pebblecrete is tough โ that's why it was so popular across Sydney through the 80s and 90s. But it has two problems as it ages.
First, the exposed aggregate traps dirt and grime in every crevice. After 20-plus years of foot traffic, it stains permanently. Pressure washing helps temporarily, but the surface never really comes clean again.
Second, old pebblecrete on walkways and steps becomes a genuine safety concern. Loose stones, worn patches and slick algae growth in shaded areas create a slip risk โ and for a medical centre with elderly and mobility-impaired patients arriving daily, that's not acceptable.
Add in the constraint: this is a working medical facility. Any work had to happen after hours and on weekends, with no equipment, materials or barriers left in the way by morning.
The Solution: Smooth It, Don't Remove It
The temptation with failing pebblecrete is to jackhammer it out and re-pour. On a commercial site, that means demolition noise, skip bins, weeks of disruption and a very large bill.
Resurfacing is the better answer โ and in this case, the only sensible one.
The key technical challenge with pebblecrete is that you can't just coat over rough exposed aggregate. The profile is far too coarse; the coating would sit on top of the stones with nothing to key into, and it would fail.
Our solution was a base coat specifically formulated to fill and smooth the rough pebblecrete surface, creating a flat, sound platform for the finish coats. That base coat is what makes the whole system work โ it bridges the 5โ8mm stones and gives the top coats something solid to bond to.
The Process
- Pressure washingEvery surface was pressure-washed to strip years of built-up grime, moss and contaminants out of the aggregate.
- Repairs where requiredLoose stones, hollow sections, cracked steps and broken edges were cut back, cleaned and repaired before any coating was applied. Defects underneath will telegraph straight through a new surface.
- Base coatA smoothing base coat was applied to fill the rough pebblecrete profile and create a level, bonded surface for the finish.
- Two top coats of StoneThe Wizcrete acrylic resurfacer was applied in the colour Stone โ two full coats for even colour depth and durability.
- Clear sealerA final clear sealer locked in the colour and added protection against UV, weather and foot traffic โ plus a slip-resistant profile.
Working Around a Live Medical Centre
All works were completed out of business hours and on weekends. That meant:
- Scheduled evening and weekend shifts to avoid all patient hours
- Zoned the site so only one walkway section was out of action at a time
- Left clear, safe access routes at all times โ critical for a medical facility
- Cleaned and packed down before opening each morning
- Worked around weather to ensure proper cure before staff and patients returned
It's slower and harder work than a straight daytime job. But it's the difference between a contractor who works on a commercial site and one who works with it.
The Results
The transformation on the steps was every bit as dramatic as the walkways โ tired, grimy pebblecrete replaced with a clean, even, slip-resistant surface.
- Fresh, modern appearance โ the tired, stained pebblecrete replaced with a clean, even Stone finish
- Slip-resistant โ a genuine safety improvement on walkways and steps
- Durable and easy to maintain โ no more aggregate crevices to trap dirt
- Zero disruption โ patients and staff never saw us working
- Fast turnaround โ completed over evenings and weekends, not weeks
- Fraction of replacement cost โ no demolition, no skips, no re-pour
Project Scope
- 300 mยฒ pebblecrete resurfacing of walkways and steps
- Pressure washing and surface preparation
- Structural repairs to damaged sections
- Smoothing base coat over rough pebblecrete
- Two top coats of Wizcrete acrylic resurfacer in "Stone"

- All works completed out of hours and on weekends
Why businesses choose Wizcrete for out-of-hours work: We've resurfaced around live medical centres, shopping centres, car parks, retirement villages and schools across Sydney for over 21 years. We're licensed (173183c), carry $20M public liability, and understand that a commercial site has to keep operating โ whatever we're doing to the floor.
Is Your Pebblecrete Due for a Refresh?
Pebblecrete is one of the most common surfaces we're asked to fix. It's beyond its useful life on thousands of Sydney driveways, walkways, patios and commercial sites.
Signs it's time:
- It looks permanently dirty even after pressure washing
- Stones are loose, flaking or missing in patches
- Green algae or moss in shaded areas (slip hazard)
- Cracking, crumbling edges or broken steps
- It simply looks dated compared with the surrounding property
In almost every case, resurfacing is dramatically cheaper than replacement โ and it's done in days, not weeks, with no demolition mess.
