When Is the Best Time to Pour Concrete in Sydney?

If you're planning a concrete driveway or patio in Sydney, timing matters more than you think. Pour concrete at the wrong time of year and you risk cracking, poor curing, and a finish that won't last.

The short answer? Spring (September–November) and autumn (March–May) are the best times to pour concrete in Sydney. Here's why — and what to watch for in other seasons.

Why Spring and Autumn Are Ideal

Sydney's mild spring and autumn temperatures sit in the sweet spot for concrete curing. Concrete needs to stay between 10°C and 30°C for optimal hydration — the chemical process that gives concrete its strength. Spring and autumn averages of 18–25°C are perfect.

You also get fewer extreme weather events. Less chance of a sudden downpour washing out your fresh pour, and less risk of scorching sun drying it too fast.

What About Summer?

Summer in Sydney (December–February) brings 30°C+ days and occasional humidity. Hot weather concrete needs special handling: cooling the mix, adding retarders, and covering with wet hessian to prevent rapid drying. It's doable — we pour concrete year-round — but requires extra care. If the temperature hits 35°C, we'll typically recommend waiting for a cooler day.

And Winter?

Winter (June–August) is actually fine for pouring in Sydney, with daytime temps often still above 15°C. The main risk is rain — June is our wettest month. A good concreter will check the 7-day forecast before scheduling, and have covers ready if showers are predicted. Cold nights (below 10°C) slow curing but don't damage the slab.
