24 hoursCan walk on it — Light foot traffic only. The concrete has set but is still curing. Keep heavy items off.
3 daysCan remove forms — The edges are firm enough to strip formwork. Still no vehicle traffic.
7 daysLight vehicle parking — 70% of strength achieved. OK for cars and small vans. No heavy trucks or machinery.
14 daysFull vehicle use — 90% of ultimate strength. Regular car and 4WD traffic is fine. Still avoid heavy trucks.
28 daysFull cure — 100% design strength achieved. Concrete is at maximum hardness. Anything goes.
What Affects Curing Time?
- Temperature — Hot weather (30°C+) speeds initial set but can cause cracking if not managed. Cold weather (under 10°C) slows curing significantly
- Concrete mix — Higher-strength mixes cure faster. Some mixes include accelerators for faster curing
- Thickness — A 100mm driveway slab cures faster than a 200mm commercial slab
- Moisture — Concrete needs moisture to cure. Wet curing (keeping the surface damp) produces the strongest results
Tips for Sydney Homeowners
- Don't rush it. The most common cause of cracked driveways is traffic too early. Wait the full 7 days before parking.
- Keep water on it. In summer, hose the driveway down daily for the first 7 days. This prevents surface cracking.
- Watch for rain. If heavy rain is forecast within 4 hours of a pour, the surface can be damaged. A good concreter covers fresh concrete.
