Concrete Driveway Maintenance — Seasonal Checklist

📅 Jul 30, 2026 · 📖 5 min read

A Sydney concrete driveway lasts 30–50 years with the right care. Without it, you'll see cracks, stains, and faded colour within 5–10 years. This seasonal checklist takes 30 minutes twice a year and can save you thousands in repairs.

🌱 Spring (September–November)

☐ Pressure clean the surfaceRemove winter grime, algae, and moss. Use a 2500–3000 PSI pressure washer with a wide fan tip — keep the nozzle moving to avoid etching the surface.
☐ Inspect for cracksWalk the driveway and note any new cracks. Hairline cracks (under 2mm) can be filled with concrete crack filler. Larger cracks need professional assessment.
☐ Check drainageMake sure water runs off the driveway properly. Pooling water shortens your driveway's life. Clear any debris from drains and gutters.

☀️ Summer (December–February)

☐ Reseal if neededSydney's UV is harsh on sealer. Do the water test: splash water on the driveway — if it soaks in quickly, it's time to reseal. Every 2–4 years for decorative concrete.
☐ Weed controlPull any weeds growing in expansion joints before roots widen the gaps. A weeding knife and some joint filler will sort it.
☐ Monitor oil stainsSummer BBQs and car maintenance can leave stubborn stains. Clean spills immediately with degreaser — once they set, they're much harder to remove.

🍂 Autumn (March–May)

☐ Clear leaf litterDecaying leaves stain concrete and trap moisture. Sweep or blow leaves off the driveway regularly during autumn.
☐ Check for trip hazardsUneven slabs or lifted edges become more dangerous in wet weather. If any slab has lifted more than 10mm, get it assessed.
☐ Apply sealer if plannedAutumn's mild temps (18–25°C) are ideal for resealing — the sealer cures evenly without cooking in the sun.

❄️ Winter (June–August)

☐ Monitor for poolingSydney's winter rain reveals any drainage problems. Walk the driveway during a downpour and note where puddles form.
☐ Clean expansion jointsUse a stiff brush to clear dirt from joints. If joint filler has cracked or lifted, replace it to prevent water getting under the slab.
☐ Plan spring upgradesWinter is the best time to plan resurfacing or replacement projects for spring installation.
