Driveway Replacement, Widening & Coloured Retaining Wall — West Pymble

Some driveway jobs are straightforward replacements. This one in West Pymble was a genuine earthworks project — a tired old driveway that needed to be demolished, widened, re-engineered and held in place by a new retaining wall, with solid rock in the way the whole time.

Wizcrete was contracted to replace the damaged original concrete and deliver a driveway the homeowners could rely on for decades. Here's how it came together.

The Brief

The existing driveway was old, damaged and — critically — too narrow for the way the property needed to function. The homeowners wanted:

• A fresh, structurally sound driveway in place of the failing original surface
• Extra width for easier, safer vehicle access
• A coloured concrete block retaining wall to support the newly excavated levels

That third point changed the scope considerably. A retaining wall means excavation, and excavation on a sloping Sydney block almost always means surprises underground.

The Build: 78m² of Engineered Concrete

The new driveway was poured at 78m², using 32MPa concrete reinforced with SL82 mesh — a genuinely heavy-duty specification suited to vehicle loads and long-term durability, rather than a cosmetic thin pour.

In practical terms:

• 32MPa is a high-strength mix — well above the standard residential driveway specification, and the right call for a driveway carrying real vehicle weight
• SL82 mesh is a heavy reinforcing mesh, giving the slab the tensile strength it needs to resist cracking and movement

Alongside the driveway, the widened section required excavation to create the space and levels for the new coloured concrete block retaining wall — which now provides both structural support and a proper finished edge to the property.

The Challenge: Rock Under the Surface

This is where the job got interesting. The excavation uncovered embedded rock across the work area — material that a standard excavator simply couldn't get through.

The solution was to bring in an excavator fitted with a hydraulic hammer to break out the rock before construction could proceed. It added time, equipment and cost that no one could have predicted from the surface — but it's exactly the kind of problem that has to be handled properly rather than worked around.

Cutting corners on rock removal would have compromised the levels, the wall footings and the driveway base. Doing it right meant the finished job sits on solid, correctly prepared ground.

The Result

A wider, stronger, better-looking driveway; proper structural retention; and a homeowner who was delighted with the finished work.

What This Job Shows

Three things worth knowing if you're planning a driveway in Sydney's upper North Shore:

1. Widening isn't cosmetic. It usually means excavation, new levels and often a retaining wall — budget for the earthworks, not just the concrete.
2. Rock is a real risk. Pymble, West Pymble, Turramurra and surrounds are notoriously rocky. Ask any concreter how they'll handle unexpected rock, and whether the quote allows for it.
3. Specification matters. 32MPa with SL82 mesh is the difference between a driveway that lasts and one that cracks in five years.
