Two of Sydney's most popular decorative concrete finishes — exposed aggregate and stamped concrete — both deliver beautiful results. But if you're deciding between them, the big question is usually: which one lasts longer?

Which Actually Lasts Longer?

Exposed aggregate typically lasts longer — by a significant margin. The exposed stone surface is incredibly durable because it's essentially the same material used in commercial concrete. The stones themselves are hard-wearing, and the surface doesn't show wear patterns as easily as stamped concrete.

Stamped concrete is also durable, but the surface texture and colour are more vulnerable. The stamped impressions can wear down over 15–20 years, especially in high-traffic areas like the centre of a driveway. The colour is applied as an integral colour in the concrete or as a dry-shake colour hardener, which can fade with UV exposure over time.

But It's Not That Simple

Lifespan depends heavily on installation quality. A poorly installed exposed aggregate driveway might fail in 10 years, while a properly installed stamped concrete driveway with regular resealing can last 25+ years. In both cases, the concrete slab underneath should last 30–50 years — it's the surface finish that degrades.

Maintenance Matters Most

• Exposed aggregate — pressure clean annually, reseal every 3–5 years. The main risk is the stones becoming loose at edges if the driveway wasn't edge-rounded properly.
• Stamped concrete — pressure clean gently (avoid high-pressure on the impressions), reseal every 2–3 years. The main risk is sealer wear in tyre paths, which creates a visible shine difference.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose exposed aggregate if: you want maximum longevity, slip resistance, and low maintenance. It's perfect for driveways, pool surrounds, and pathways where safety matters.

Choose stamped concrete if: you want a specific pattern (like slate or cobblestone), want more colour options, and don't mind resealing every couple of years. It's ideal for patios, alfresco areas, and feature driveways.

Both are excellent choices. The right one depends on your priorities — but either way, proper installation by a licensed concreter is what determines whether it lasts 10 years or 40.
