Some jobs test everything you know about concrete. This Whale Beach driveway was one of them โ€” a steep, exposed coastal driveway that had been patched, painted and painted again, until the surface was failing faster than anyone could keep up with.

It's also a perfect example of why resurfacing isn't just a cosmetic fix. Handled properly, it restores structural integrity, not just appearance. Here's exactly how we did it.

The Problem: A Driveway That Was Failing From the Inside

The client came to us with a driveway that looked bad on the surface โ€” but the real issues ran much deeper.

Concrete cancer was the most serious problem. This is what happens when the reinforcing steel inside the slab begins to corrode. As steel rusts, it expands, and that expansion literally pushes the concrete apart from the inside out โ€” causing spalling, cracking and chunks breaking away.

Left alone, concrete cancer doesn't stop. It accelerates. Which is why the first thing we did was assess whether this slab was even a viable candidate for resurfacing โ€” or whether it needed full replacement.

It was also a sloping driveway, which raises the stakes considerably. On a gradient, every crack and every compromised section is a trip hazard, and water finds its way into anything that's open. Coastal exposure at Whale Beach meant salt, wind-driven rain and constant UV โ€” the harshest possible conditions for concrete.

And then there was the paint. Multiple layers of old epoxy paint had been applied over the years, each one trapping the failure underneath, each one flaking and peeling. No coating will bond properly over that. It all had to come off.

The Preparation: Where the Real Work Happens

Most of this job was preparation โ€” five-plus days of it. This is the part nobody sees, and it's the part that determines whether the finished job lasts five years or twenty-five.

1. Concrete Cancer Remediation

We cut back and removed all unsound concrete around the affected areas โ€” anything loose, cracked or delaminating. Exposed reinforcing steel was treated to arrest the corrosion process. The repaired sections were then rebuilt with a high-strength structural repair mortar, matched and finished to the surrounding profile so the repair would disappear under the new surface.

This is the step that's often skipped by cheaper operators โ€” and it's the reason their jobs fail. You cannot coat over concrete cancer and expect it to hold. The cancer keeps eating.

2. Crack Repair

Every crack was opened, cleaned out and filled with a flexible, high-strength repair compound. Flexible is important โ€” rigid fillers simply crack again the moment the slab moves with temperature or ground movement.

3. Heavy Grinding & Surface Preparation

Multiple layers of old epoxy paint had to be ground away โ€” not just scuffed, but fully removed. We used heavy diamond grinding equipment to strip the surface back to sound, bare concrete and to create the mechanical profile (the "key") that the new overlay needs in order to bond.

This is unglamorous, slow, dusty work. It's also non-negotiable. An overlay applied over a poorly prepared surface will delaminate โ€” sometimes within a single season.

4. Cleaning and Priming

Once ground back, the whole slab was thoroughly cleaned to remove all dust and residue, then primed with a bonding agent suited to acrylic resurfacing. The primer is what chemically welds the new surface to the old concrete.

Why this matters to you: If a quote for resurfacing looks surprisingly cheap, ask exactly what preparation is included. Proper remediation and grinding can represent 60โ€“70% of the total job cost. A "cheap" resurfacing usually means the expensive part was skipped.

The Finish: Stone Colour Acrylic at P5 Anti-Slip

With the substrate sound and prepared, we applied an 85 mยฒ stone colour acrylic resurfacing system.

We chose a stone tone for good reason โ€” it complements the coastal environment, hides dust and tyre marks far better than a light cream or a dark charcoal, and reads as natural rather than painted. On a property with water views, the driveway should sit quietly in the landscape, not compete with it.

The critical specification on this job was the P5 slip rating โ€” the highest classification for pedestrian slip resistance under Australian standards.

Why P5 on a sloping driveway is essential

P5 is achieved through the aggregate profile in the coating itself โ€” not by adding sand to paint. It gives genuine grip underfoot while still being comfortable to walk on and easy to clean. On a steep coastal driveway, it's not an upgrade. It's a requirement.

The Result

Five-plus days of preparation, then a transformation that looks effortless:

The client got a driveway that's safer, structurally sound and genuinely good-looking โ€” for a fraction of what a full demolition and re-pour would have cost.

Does Your Driveway Have Concrete Cancer?

Watch for these signs โ€” and act early, because concrete cancer gets worse, never better:

If you're seeing any of these, the earlier it's assessed the better. Catching concrete cancer early can mean repair and resurfacing. Left too long, replacement may be the only option โ€” and that costs many times more.
